FAQs About Permanent Cosmetics in Fredericksburg

Does it hurt to receive permanent makeup?
Several topical anesthetic and desensitizing products are used to make the procedure as comfortable, relaxing, and pain-free as possible.  Most people say that they are very surprised at how gentle the process is.   Before we begin, a topical anesthetic developed just for permanent cosmetics is applied to the area first.  You will probably feel a mild vibration or even a little tickling feeling during the procedure.  Some people even fall asleep!

What happens first?
We want you to be completely assured this will be one of the best decisions you make for yourself.  At New U Salon, we will begin with a consultation during which we explain in great detail what to expect and how the process works.  Communication is essential in achieving your perfect results.  Everyone has different preferences, and some women want more subtle results while others want dramatic effects.  We’ll take all the time needed to answer all of your questions and make sure that we have a clear understanding of your preferred colors, placement, intensity or softness.  For example, if you are interested in permanent makeup eyebrows, we will draw the shape of your brows on and when you are thrilled with the design and placement, we move on to the next step of color matching. Again, you are a part of each step so there are no surprises.

Is it safe?
Plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and other specialists in the beauty industry have endorsed cosmetic tattoing as  one of the safest cosmetic enhancements available.   Micropigmentation and the ink and pigment used for the procedure has been approved under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.  At New U Salon, we take great care to ensure proper sterilization and sanitary guidelines, and we meet and exceed all Health Dept. and OSHA regulations.

Allergic reactions to permanent cosmetics are extremely rare.   If you follow all after care tips and recommendations, you should experience a very positive experience following your appointment.

How long will my permanent makeup last?
This will depend on many factors including your skin type, your lifestyle and the darkness and intensity of the color used for your makeup application.  With age, sun exposure, and the natural exfoliation process of your skin, your color may fade somewhat after 3 to 5 years, but it can be easily touched up with a maintenance visit.  Darker pigments will last longer than lighter colors.

Exposure to both sunlight and regular light can lighten the color.  Sun exposure is the number 1 reason for fading of permanent cosmetics.  When outdoors, you should always wear sunscreen on any areas that have been cosmetically enhanced.   For lips, choose a lip balm with a good SPF, and for brows, apply sunblock and wear sunglasses.  Also avoid the use of exfoliating skin-care products on the procedure area.

What is the recovery time?
Recovery time is very minimal.  You may experience slight swelling, tenderness, or redness in the area that has received the procedure.   This swelling or tenderness can last from 2 to 3 days for eye procedures and up to one week for lips.   Applying ice to the affected area will help relieve symptoms, but you should avoid using alpha-hydroxy acid products or topical tretinoin on tattooed areas because they can lighten the pigments.  Otherwise, you will be able to follow your normal daily routine.  Most of our clients can go out the same night as procedure day, while others choose to avoid important events for a few days.
Another thing to note is that for the first few days, the procedure area will look much darker, like you are wearing heavier makeup.  Once your skin heals with the beautiful permanent micropigmentation in it, the layer of dried pigment on top of the skin sloughs off and the actual true color will be revealed.
