Pre Waxing Tips


Whether you’re seeking a quick eyebrow wax or a perhaps a leg or Bikini wax, following  good procedures before your appointment at our salon can ensure you have a positive experience.    Below are a few general guidelines to follow.  

1.  For best results, allow for at least 3/8 inches of hair growth before your appointment

Hair removal goes much faster when the hair to be waxed is at least 3/8” to ½” long.  Longer hair gives the wax something to adhere to, and makes removal quick and easy with less need for touch-up or tweezers.  


2.  Avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours prior to your visit

One of the keys to making your hair removal experience as painless as possible is to avoid certain things that can cause your skin to become sensitive to pain.  Both caffeine and alcohol can have a stimulating effect on your nervous system, causing your skin and pores to tighten, and causing nerve endings to be more sensitive.  
For best results, we recommend avoiding those extra cups of coffee or cocktails and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before your visit. 

 

3.  Avoid self-tanning products, sun exposure and tanning beds prior to your visit

In addition to avoiding caffeine and alcohol, we ask that you also avoid exposing your skin to the sun or tanning beds before your appointment.   (This also includes avoiding the use of  self-tanners.)   Tanning can make your skin more tender which can lead to discomfort during waxing.


4.  Avoid applying heavy moisturizers or oils to your skin before waxing

Products such as body butter, intensive moisturizing lotions, creams and oils can interfere with how well the wax adheres to your hair, making the hair removal process more lengthy and difficult.  For best results arrive at the salon for your appointment with clean dry skin that is free of oils, lotions, or makeup. 

 
5.  Exfoliate your skin

Exfoliation is great for your skin and can have a positive effect on waxing.  We recommend that you gently clean your skin using a mild exfoliating shower gel to remove dead skin cells and debris before your waxing service.  Stay away from highly abrasive body scrubs which can make your skin rough and irritated.  Stick with gentle cleansing products that will simply give your skin a good cleansing without increasing its sensitivity.


6.  Avoid the heat

Try to avoid working out at the gym, running, or heavy exercise that can cause your body to sweat and become overheated immediately before your visit.  Also avoid saunas and hot showers.  Heat is another factor that can cause your skin to be more sensitive, and sitting in a hot tub or soaking your hair will soften it, causing it to break more easily and making waxing less effective.


7.  Wear comfortable clothing

If you are receiving a service such as a back or full leg wax, or perhaps a Brazilian or bikini wax, plan ahead by wearing soft, loose, comfortable clothing that will allow  your skin to breathe.   Tight clothing, spandex, nylon, and jeans can trap heat and cause freshly waxed skin to become irritated.    Opt for loose fitting, breathable cotton clothing instead.  


8.  Consult our specialist if you are taking any medications

Certain prescription drugs and medications can affect the way that your skin reacts during waxing.  If you have recently received acne treatments, chemical peels, microdermabrasion or botox (or if you are using any of the following  Accutane, Retin-A, Retinol, Glycocides, antibiotics, or Benzoyl peroxide),  please check with our specialist.

** We want your visit to be as relaxing as possible.  Feel free to take Ibuprofen or Advil about 30 – 45 minutes before your appointment to help alleviate any pain or discomfort, especially if you are planning for a Bikini or Brazilian wax.  If you have any questions, please call.  We’ll be happy to share additional tips or recommendations.
